GM was rumored to be introducing the all-new high-performance 2020 Chevy Blazer SS at the New York Auto Show last month. But that doesn’t seem to have happened, although many rumors hit the internet. Based on the rendering image, the new Blazer SS SUV looks very sporty with a design style almost similar to the Chevy Camaro. It’s not wrong if GM intends to launch the 2020 Blazer SS in the near future, considering there are quite strong competitors in this high performance SUV segment like the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and Ford Edge ST. So there’s a gap for GM to take a little cake from its closest competitor.
The new Blazer SS is set to be a performance-focused crossover with the possibility of 500 horsepower from under its hood. Recent reports indicate that the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer SS will be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission capable of producing 404 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. That’s the same powertrain that you can find on the current Cadillac CT6. And unfortunately, there’s no 6.2-liter V8 engine option with 455 horsepower coming from the Chevy Camaro. Even though there are many rumors out there that indicate the Camaro engine is ready for the upcoming Blazer SS.
Of course, by relying solely on the Cadillac CT6-based powertrain, it’s not strong enough to fight the Jeep Trackhawk that offers 700 horsepower. Nevertheless, it seems stronger than the Ford Edge ST. Apart from that, the upcoming Blazer SS will be equipped with a standard all-wheel drive system and is expected to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.3 seconds before reaching its top speed at 155 mph. There is a possibility of another four-cylinder engine with 193 horsepower offered on this high-performance SUV.
The turbocharged and superchargers should be offered in order to make the engine able to crank out more than 500 horsepower. It seems that the V6 engine with 464 HP sourced from the Cadillac ATS-V can also be another engine option for the 2020 Chevy Blazer SS, but some tweaks are needed to produce more than 500 horsepower. Chevrolet is also rumored to be offering a new RS version on the upcoming Blazer crossover, which is predicted to offer more power than the base Blazer SS model. In addition, there will also be a hybrid version, but there’s no SS version like the Chevy Camaro SS.
Speculative rendering images show that the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer SS adopts an aggressive design style with aero-enhanced body and black trim, plus it’s equipped with larger 21-inch alloy wheels and lowered suspension. There’s no official word on prices and release dates, but the 2020 Chevy Blazer SS is expected to be introduced in the United States around the end of this year. Prices may be slightly different from the current standard Blazer models and are expected to be priced starting at around $29,000 for the base model of the upcoming Blazer SS crossover.
