The next-generation 2020 Buick Encore and Encore GX has been officially revealed at the Shanghai Motor Show late last month. The biggest news is that these two new crossover will not only be sold in China, but it will also arrive on the U.S. dealers floors in the next few months. The new Encore and its long-wheel version Encore GX are expected to replace the current-gen Encore SUV in the United States, which is Buick’s best-selling vehicle in the past three years.
There have been many design changes, fundamental revisions, and significant improvements on the new Buick Encore that was showcased at the Shanghai Auto Show in China. Well, talking about the design changes, the 2020 Buick Encore looks more or less the same as the model currently sold in the United States. Although the regular Encore looks more sporty and more handsome with lower design proportions. However, basically, it still has the same design proportion as the current generation model.
Meanwhile, the 2020 Encore GX is equipped with a longer wheelbase, and looks more upright than the regular model. Both regular Encore and Encore GX adopt a similar design style, including the use of wide grillers and spearlike chrome window trim. A rumor recently revealed that the regular 2020 Buick Encore will not be sold on the U.S. market, considering this model is too small for U.S. customers. Instead, the new regular Encore will only be produced for the Chinese market.
Buick hasn’t released much information regarding the technical specifications. However, the 2020 Buick Encore and Encore GX will be powered by a Ecotec four-cylinder engine that can be paired either to a nine-speed automatic or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). It will also share the same new platform with the New Chevy Trax and GMC SUV. While the U.S.-spec 2020 Encore and Encore GX are likely to be available with turbocharged engines mated to the standard all-wheel drive system.
On the other hand, the smaller 2020 Encore crossover is mostly based on the Opel Mokka and will reportedly ride on the new GM’s Gamma II platform or better known as GEM. While the 2020 Buick Encore GX is likely to be based on the latest GM’s VSS-F platform with an overall size much larger than the regular model. Of course, both models appear to have a sharp body line design.
A recent report also revealed that the release date for the 2020 Buick Encore GX is set for around the end of this year on the U.S. market. However, there is still no certainty whether the new regular Encore crossover will be sold in the United States.
